COMM 150: Open thread and assignment for Friday: 1. What is Google doing with its logo and why? 2. Preview of Chapter 1 in our text

Here's a background story on Google, with a YouTube clip of yesterday's dancing balls: http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/07/google-logo/

Two assignments. Post as comments to the blog ... or be ready to post in class Friday.

1. What's Google up to? [Depends on what they announce Wednesday.]

2. What are the most important points in Chapter 1 of John Vivian, "Media of Mass Communication?" Why do you say they're the most important?

I believe Google changes its logo often for many reasons. One reason is to go along with the theme of a holiday, day of remembrance, etc. I feel that it will help people remember that its Halloween, Christmas, Veterans Day, etc. People get so caught up in their everyday lives that they tend to forget what day it is. I found this website http://www.google-logos.com/ it has every google logo thats been out there and explains why and what it was for! Pretty interesting. As for reading the chapter in the book I have yet to have received my book from Chegg.com I ordered it about a week ago so I apologize for not having much to say on Chapter 1

I believe google is changing it's logo to get more people to the site so they can make more money. I think most of the vocab and some of the text is important but alot of it is stuff people should already know.

Some reasons that I found that google changes there logo is because a big change is coming up in the technology world or for holidays or peoples birthdays. Its always interesting to see what you will get on google and find when on there. In chapter 1 it talks about mass meadi and the different termanology that is used for it, and explaining how it plays such an influential role in todays world and business

I believe that Google is changing its logo for a couple reasons. First of all, as I read in class Google is doing something new with their search engine. I think they are doing fun things such as, the ball thing, and changing the colors of the word "Google," to get some attention. With this attention they are getting, they will be able to promote their new and advanced search engine.
-As for reading the first chapter, I ordered my books off of Chegg.com as well, and the wrong book came in, therefore I am in the midst of getting my book, the old one is sent back now I am just waiting to receive my new one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

google changes its logo everyday so that they can generate interest in what the next design will be. instead of just being a regular run of the mill search engine, google will be something talked about and something that people are actually interested in.

as for chapter one, it gives a basic overview of all the aspects in our life that media is associated with and how it effects society.

I think that Google is going "ballsy" to create more attention for the company. I think its just another marketing stunt inorder to get more people to use there services. The text book talks about basic media and how it is associated with society.

I don't think they were doing anything, I believe they were just trying to get the users attention by doing what they did. People notice change and I think Google was just trying to get peoples attention.

1. What's Google up to? [Depends on what they announce Wednesday.] - Not much to it really. I understand why they're doing certain things but I don't think it's going to change much. When I get on google to search something, I instantly put in what I need to find and don't pay much attention to the background. Certain people might catch things about google that I don't, such as the colored circles bouncing around, but I don't catch much but the main website. I do think that themes for a certain holiday would be cool though.

2. What are the most important points in Chapter 1 of John Vivian, "Media of Mass Communication?" Why do you say they're the most important? - Mostly talks about mass media, and how it has an effect on today's world. Different things that are related to mass media as well. Gives the basics on communcations and other related media.

I think that Google chnages its logo so much just to keep people interested and coming back to see the next creative Goole logo.Their way of making more money.

Google change their backrounds a lot, because they know everyone uses this search engine. This is a great way for the company to advertise as well as send out mass media connections.

1. I believe Google changed its logo to gain attention from press and users. They wanted to get people excited in a fun way for its announcement last Wednesday. They announced that Google will now auto-complete when typing in the search bar.

Google tends to change its logo for several reasons including important dates or things to come. One of the biggest reasons Google does this is to create hype about their search engine. In creating this hype they receive more visitors and in doing so bigger profits for the company.

About Me

Springfield (Ill.), United States
I'm a retired English, journalism and cultural studies teacher at Springfield College in Illinois (acquired by Benedictine University and subsequently closed). I coordinate jam sessions for the "Clayville Pioneer Academy of Music" at Clayville Historic Site and the Prairieland Strings dulcimer club, and I sing in the choir and the contemporary praise team at Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield. On Hogfiddle I post links and video clips for our sessions and workshops on the mountain dulcimer (a.k.a. "hog fiddle"), as well as research notes on folklore and cultural studies, hymnody and traditional Anglo-Celtic and Scandinavian music. I also posted assignments and readings in my interdisciplinary humanities classes. The Mackerel Wrapper (now on hiatus), carried assignments and readings for my mass comm. students. I started teaching b/log when I chaired SCI-Benedictine's assessment committee, and reopened it as the privatization of public schools grew increasingly troubling and closer to home.
