COMM 150: In-class journal question, first day

What do you hope to learn in COMM 150? What are your career aspirations? (How you going to make your first million dollars?) Have you taken classes in journalism, done public relations for a school event, etc.? How do mass media affect your daily life?

In COMM 150, I hope to learn more about communications. I already know quite a bit, but seeing as I was not allowed to take any higher communication courses prior to taking this one, I will just have to hope that I can learn something. I would like to be a writer, more than anything. I don’t know how practical this aspiration is, though. I’d like to work with books in any way I can. This is subject to change, but writing and editing have always been my strong points. I enjoy reading a lot and working with the writings of others.
I was on my high school newspaper staff for two years. I was the editor in chief my senior year, so I have a pretty good background in journalism. I also took part in a Student Film Club in which I worked with skills involved in the communications field. I also write for the Voice section of the State-Journal Register.
Every day, mass media is a part of my life in the form of the internet and television. I read the news on the internet. I’m fed advertisements and information via commercials on the television and web pages. I listen to music and watch movies and read books. I suppose I see billboards and other physical manifestations of advertising while driving. Mass media helps me to form my opinions on events going on in the world. It helps me to connect to the world on a daily basis. Mass media is a linkage institution to the government. The media serves as a social facilitator in many ways.

im not really sure what to expect from COMM 150 because this is my first communications class. ive changed my major a couple different times and i hope communications sticks. so i guess im just trying to get the basics of communications out of this class. at this point i have no idea what my career will be like and my first million will hopefully come from winning the lottery. mass media definately affects everybodys daily life because without mass media you wouldnt have a clue what was going on in the world.

I would like to learn more about Comm. I just changed my major to Communications. This is my first class I have taken. I am not sure what I am going to do with the degree. I hope this class gives me a better understanding in the field of Comm. I changed to Comm. becuase it is a skill that is used everyday in life. Learning a little more in this class might help me get a better understnding on this field and get me started on a caree that I might ewnjoy. It is something that is used in everyday life TV, newspaper, internet these are just a few ways that I use it everyday.

COMM 150 is my first communications class at Benedictine University. I was studying Psychology & Criminal Justice for the past two years, but couldn't pass one of the required classes (blah!). So, I am now a Communications major. With that said,I am hoping to learn better communicaton skills in this class. My career aspirations are completely undecided now because of my recent change of majors. Mass media affects the way that I view politics, money, beauty, fashion, etc.

My overall goal for the semester is to spark some sort of hidden interest in myself. Despite having gone to Lincoln Land Community College for two years already, I am still unsure of what I want to do with my life. To me this seems like it has been the hardest decision of my life. Even in grade school, when we had career day I would never know what to dress up as. So hopefully COMM 150 might ignite some buried passion for writing or PR that I’ve never felt before.
I suppose that if there was some sort of combustible material concealed in my being it would have exploded by now. During my time at LLCC, I was in charge of public relations for their International Club. I had a good time doing it, but there was no heavenly chorus telling me this was my path. So perhaps St. Benedictine University will have a better chance at showing me the way. COMM 150 may be exactly what I’ve been looking for.
If I don’t win my first million dollars through the lottery, I suppose I’ll have to do it the old fashioned way, through hard work and determination. The problem is that a lot of really good jobs don’t pay that well. During this time of economic crisis being able to have a good job and to support yourself is one of the most important things. Right now, being an optometrist (eye doctor) is at the top of my list for professions. Reasons why? Optometrists will always be in demand, they have good business hours, and most doctors do get paid well. If only I were a math whiz this would be perfect. So as soon as I overcome my fear of numbers I will be well on my way to my first million, and I can’t wait.
Media has a huge affect on how everyone lives, except maybe the Amish (they’re so lucky). Anymore, to be disconnected from one’s phone for a day is like someone being disconnected from their head. They feel completely lost. The amount of information that is being pumped to the masses on a daily basis is actually too much for one person to digest. I may have my radio playing all day while I’m driving and go past maybe 100 billboards, but overall I may hear about 5 minutes worth of information and notice perhaps 2 billboards. So I may be drowning in media, but it doesn’t really affect me, because I don’t really take the time to notice.

I recently switched my major to communications, therefore this is one of my first communication classes. I'm not entirely sure what to expect of this course, yet i hope it betters my general knowledge for the Comm field. I have little experience in writing for publishing or anything along those lines, therefore i also hope that i better understand what it takes. I'm also undecided in the career path that i will take my communications degree. Mass mmedia affects everyday life whether in be from the television, newspaper, or facebook. Mass media helps to link us into the rest of the world's current events. Hopefully my first million will fall from the sky and land in my lap.

About Me

Springfield (Ill.), United States
I'm a retired English, journalism and cultural studies teacher at Springfield College in Illinois (acquired by Benedictine University and subsequently closed). I coordinate jam sessions for the "Clayville Pioneer Academy of Music" at Clayville Historic Site and the Prairieland Strings dulcimer club, and I sing in the choir and the contemporary praise team at Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield. On Hogfiddle I post links and video clips for our sessions and workshops on the mountain dulcimer (a.k.a. "hog fiddle"), as well as research notes on folklore and cultural studies, hymnody and traditional Anglo-Celtic and Scandinavian music. I also posted assignments and readings in my interdisciplinary humanities classes. The Mackerel Wrapper (now on hiatus), carried assignments and readings for my mass comm. students. I started teaching b/log when I chaired SCI-Benedictine's assessment committee, and reopened it as the privatization of public schools grew increasingly troubling and closer to home.
